Checking a Singapore lawyer before arranging a consultation

Check the lawyer on the Legal Services Regulatory Authority (LSRA) website before you arrange a consultation. The Ministry of Law describes the LSRA website as maintaining a database of all practising lawyers and all licensed law practices in Singapore, with an advanced search that allows searches by area of practice as well as by category of registration or licence to practise.

The Law Society of Singapore website also carries a directory of law practices, sorted by area of practice. That directory is not a complete list of all law practices; it covers only those which have chosen to advertise on the website. A name missing from it is therefore not proof that anyone is unlicensed.

What the LSRA database actually gives you

Two things matter when you look someone up: the person and the practice they work through.

The database covers both sides. It holds records of all practising lawyers and all licensed law practices in Singapore, and its advanced search lets you filter by area of practice and by category of registration or licence to practise. That combination is what lets you connect a name you were given to a registration record, rather than relying on a business card, a website, or a message signature.

What it does not do is verify a person in the abstract. A check is only meaningful when you run it against a live record for that named individual or practice.

How to run the check

Open the LSRA website. Go to the database of practising lawyers and licensed law practices. Enter the lawyer’s full name exactly as it was given to you. Use the advanced search to narrow by area of practice. Read the category of registration or licence to practise shown in the result. Then search the law practice itself and confirm it appears as a licensed practice. Note the date you ran the check. Repeat the check if a long gap opens up before the consultation.

The two directories are not interchangeable

LSRA website database Law Society of Singapore directory
What it lists All practising lawyers and all licensed law practices in Singapore Law practices, sorted by area of practice
Coverage Described by the Ministry of Law as covering all practising lawyers and licensed practices Not a complete list — only practices that chose to advertise
Search Advanced search by area of practice and by category of registration or licence to practise Sorted based on area of practice
If a name is missing Needs a live record check before you draw any conclusion Does not by itself establish that the lawyer or practice is unlicensed

The practical reading is straightforward: use the LSRA database as the check, and read the Law Society directory as advertising, not as a register.

What remains unresolved

This article does not verify any named lawyer. The official excerpt describes the database but supplies no live result for any named person. Run the lookup on the LSRA site before relying on a particular record.

Two limits follow from that. First, a directory entry is a record at the time you read it, not a statement about any other date. Second, finding a name in a database tells you about registration and licence category; it does not tell you whether the lawyer is suited to your matter, how the engagement will be priced, or what outcome you should expect. Those are questions to put to the practice directly at the consultation.
